Join Yung Prodigy on December 8th from 4:30pm –7:00pm at Bankstown Arts Centre for Impact Over Image—an evening where genuine impact takes the stage over appearances. This event is a space for our community, with a warm welcome to accomplices and the wider community who wish to connect, learn, and celebrate with us.
Prepare for an evening of powerful poetry, meaningful discussions on health in community-led spaces, and insights on solidarity and true collective growth. We’re honored to have Aunty Rhonda opening the night with a Welcome to Country and a session on sovereignty from a First Nations perspective, reflecting on its deep connection to community-controlled spaces and how it informs the work we do. Expect an atmosphere of connection, where stories and experiences are shared openly, and change is celebrated. Enjoy soul food, music, and inspiring conversations that go beyond performative gestures and focus on real community impact.
One (of many) key point of feedback from our Community Retreat was that the social sector speaks their own language and expects people to just ‘get it’ especially if someone has lived experience of a particular issue, it is assumed they have all the answers. From this feedback we will be launching Mobilise Through Theory. Mobilise through theory will be a collective which meets via video call every month or so so read, watch or listen to pieces of content that speak to transformative justice, decolonial approaches and community care models. In short, this will be a book club. With special guests joining to speak to their area of expertise, this space is aimed to educate, liberate and activate members of the community to put theory into practice or to simply learn. EOI's close on the 14th August 2024 email maia@yungprodigy.org to apply or ask questions.
So called Australia does not acknowledge parental incarceration and its impact on young people. There are limited resources and spaces which have dialogue about parental incarceration. Because of this lack, Yung Prodigy has decided to connect with our brothers and sisters abroad to unpack this issue from different contexts. Our aim is to identify how this impacts communities, what grassroot action is being done and which communities are leading this work. To relay the information we have learnt, Yung Prodigy has created a mini series on our social media account as a form of connection, solidarity and information sharing. As part of Youth Week 2024, Yung Prodigy is holding so called Australia’s first-ever collective retreat for young people who have/had lived experience or impact of parental incarceration. Over two days, young people will gather together to learn and share in creativity, discovery, mapping and storytelling. As a collective, we will create Australia’s first space by us, for us, and a community campaign for future awareness. We believe lived experience is important, and we're here to welcome and champion the forgotten victims of this system so that together we can make an impact on the issues that matter most to us. Designed for and by people with lived experience, we hope this retreat and the activities shared will serve as a space for our unserved and overlooked community. EOI's are now open until 22nd March 2024 - email maia@yungprodigy.org to show interest or learn more.
